Precision is critical here—once two surfaces touch, repositioning isn’t an option.

4.Hot Melt Adhesives

Hot melt adhesives, applied via glue guns, are convenient for small-scale or decorative veneer applications. They bond quickly but lack the durability for demanding environments. In my shop, I’ve used hot melts mainly for prototypes or temporary fixes, as they struggle with prolonged exposure to heat or moisture.

I usually give both surfaces a quick pass with a sanding block, which creates micro-abrasions for the glue to anchor into. Remove all dust afterward with a vacuum or tack cloth—leftover particles can weaken the bond.

Both veneer and substrate must be as flat as possible for uniform adhesion. Even minor warping can cause air pockets or incomplete bonding. If a substrate is slightly bowed, I’ve found that lightly moistening and clamping it flat overnight often helps recover the shape before proceeding.
